Dreams Career Mentorship
Dreams Coming True
The Dreams Program is a year-long career mentorship and exploration experience for youth ages 10+ at West Broadway Youth Outreach. Designed to help young people imagine their future and grow to believe it is achievable, the program supports youth in discovering their interests, exploring career possibilities, and gaining the tools and confidence to pursue their goals.
At the heart of the Dreams Program is mentorship. Each participant has the opportunity to meet someone who works in their dream career field. These mentorship meetings are typically one-time events lasting a few hours, but their impact is long-lasting. Meeting someone who is living their dream helps make a young person’s goal feel real, attainable, and within reach. Mentors provide insight, encouragement, and a concrete example of what is possible.
Since the program began in 2010, Dreams participants have taken part in more than 1,100 mentorship meetings with professionals from a wide range of fields. Careers explored have included marine biology, midwifery, engineering, real estate and property management, law, nursing, photography, music, and many more. These meetings are meaningful for both youth and mentors, creating lasting inspiration and lifelong memories.
Beyond mentorship, the Dreams Program offers immersive learning opportunities such as career research, field trips to educational institutions, leadership events, and hands-on projects that allow youth to continue exploring and refining their aspirations.
The program concludes with a unique annual film project that documents each participant’s year-long journey, which is then shown at a variety of venues around Winnipeg, including respected cultural institutions such as the Winnipeg Art Gallery and Cinematheque.
Through mentorship, exploration, and creative expression, the Dreams Program empowers young people to see their future as full of possibility and to take their first steps toward it.
